Burnie Maker’s Workshop by Terroir claimed top honours at this year’s Tasmanian Architecture Awards winning the Alan C Walker Award for Public Architecture.

Other prizes included the Roy Sharrington Smith Award for Heritage and Small Project Architecture Award both awarded to Maria Gigney Architects for their conversion of an existing stone barn into a single bedroom residence.

The jury commended the project, describing it as an ‘unambiguously modern refurbishment, sensitively placed within existing heritage fabric’.

Also the recipient of two awards, were Six Degrees Pty Ltd for their creation of a new School of Furniture Design at the Launceston campus of the University of Tasmania.

They received the Sustainable Architecture Award and a Public Architecture Award for seamlessly incorporating  ‘simple sustainable design techniques into an architectural expression that is appropriate not only to the industrial nature of the site, but also the pragmatic requirements of the newly established furniture school.’

The major residential award, the Esmond Dorney Award for Residential Architecture –Houses went to Trial Bay House by HBV Architects.

Multi-award winning architect Robert Morris-Nunn won the 2010 President’s Prize for his collection of work as well as his willingness to stand up for what he believes in.
