As a key part of the Federal Government’s stimulus packages a total of $550 million will be allocated to councils under the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

Architects will be offering their services on an initial pro bono basis to local councils building sports grounds, libraries, sports centres, town halls and other facilities.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to provide local facilities of real design quality and lasting value as a community service,” said Institute National President Howard Tanner.

Tanner said that Architects could help councils ensure that projects are submitted before the March 6 deadline.

“Good design does not need to be thrown out the window when spending money quickly is the priority,” said ALGA President, Councillor Geoff Lake.

“This partnership assists councils to deliver well designed and functional community facilities while meeting the Rudd Government’s immediate spending targets.”

“This is an opportunity to reinvigorate local built environments while stimulating the economy,” he said. “Councils, architects and local residents have a common interest in securing quality design outcomes.”

Preference will be given to projects able to commence within six months of funding agreements and those that can be substantially completed by the end of next year.
