In light of the PRANA+ exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore, we break down the features of the human-centric office floor light from ESYLUX and explain why it is award-winning.
August 22nd, 2016
A collaboration between German manufacturer ESYLUX and Peter Schmidt, Belliero & Zandée (PSBZ), the PRANA+ office floor light is a multi-award-winning product. Aside from receiving the Red Dot Award for Lighting Design, the PRANA+ has also received the ICONIC Award for Interior Design from the German Design Council and the Italian A’Design Award.
Peter Schmidt is one of Germany’s leading product designers, known for his world-famous designs, such as his perfume bottle for Jil Sander, which was displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA. In 1972, Schmidt founded the Peter Schmidt Studios, which was handed to BBDO in 2006 and became known as Peter Schmidt Group. Since 2014, he has been working alongside Daniel Belliero and Marcel Zandée under PSBZ, a young but renowned design agency with many successful international projects under its belt, including the PRANA+ office floor light for ESYLUX.

Sporting clean lines and smooth curves, the lamp’s minimalist design stems from a focus on flexibility in functionality, in alignment with ESYLUX’s brief to “keep people and their requirements at the centre.” The linear movement of the lamp head ensures that the lighting can adapt to varying desk lengths. An extendable base allows the PRANA+ to be used, even when the edge of a desk extends to the floor level.

A smart sensor, situated in the upper section of the lamp stem, forms the core of PRANA+, ensuring that artificial light is only emitted with the presence of people. Featuring a light sensor technology, the lamp measures daylight and readjusts itself to be only as bright as required.
The integrated SymbiLogic technology by ESYLUX offers a dynamic progression of lighting intensity and colour, echoing natural daylight – a type of light known to improve vitality, concentration and sense of well-being in the workplace, leading to enhanced productivity and a better working experience. The human-centric lamp is also called a “biologically effective light” for its ability to regulate the user’s body clock to help them sleep better at night, as it adapts to lighting conditions in a range of world cities across various global latitudes.

Users of the PRANA+ are also able to customise the settings of the light as desired. The control element in the lamp stem enables intuitive control. The user can adjust lighting intensity, colour temperature, select overhead lighting and downlight, or preset a range of self-generated lighting ‘scenes’ for great convenience. Better yet, these functions can also be accessed using WiFi and the web app, which offers even more comprehensive settings.

An integrated wireless EnOcean module allows multiple lights to be used in an intelligent manner. When there is only one person left in the office, the module prevents the formation of an isolated lighting island. Instead, the rest of the lamps will emit a soft light that maintains an uplighting atmosphere, even when it is past the end of business. When the last person leaves, the sensor technology switches off all the lamps automatically.
From 1 August to 30 November 2016, visitors can experience the PRANA+, alongside other cutting-edge, international products at Red Dot Design Museum Singapore.
