Running from now till 27 July at Third Floor – Hermes, Aiko Tezuka’s latest textile deconstruction project explores intercultural exchanges and the metamorphosis of societies in the Singapore context.
June 4th, 2014
Berlin-based Japanese artist Aiko Tezuka has a particular fascination for textiles, from medieval tapestries to fabrics intended for wear. By unwinding fabric to reveal its structure, the artist seeks to unravel and recompose the stories hidden within the material and in the process, capture the flow of time and the continuous process of metamorphosis.
Certainty/Entropy, currently being exhibited at Third Floor – Hermes, is the artist’s latest exploration of these invisible narratives. The four multicoloured works, conceptualised and produced by Tezuka and her team of seven artisans at a textile lab in Holland, is a vibrant landscape of birds, butterflies, flowers and fruit patterns inspired by Singapore’s cultural diversity, and are interlaced with modern-day iconographies.
And by pulling out threads from the compositions, the woven motifs fade out gently into blurred images, inviting viewers to contemplate the hidden stories beneath ‘the fabric of life’.
Certainty/Entropy is being held from 30 May – 27 July 204, from 10.30am to 7.30pm daily (free admission) at Third Floor – Hermes, 541 Orchard Road, Liat Towers.
