Location was considered the most important factor when it comes to purchasing a property. But in recent years, convenience, which takes the form of amenities and connectivity is equally desirable. One Holland Village, a mixed-used development within District 10 by Far East Organization together with its joint venture partners Sekisui House and Sino Group possesses both of these desirable qualities.
Set to complete between 2023 and 2024, One Holland Village will have a good diverse mix of uses – private residences, serviced residences, retail, office and community spaces. To further ensure an attractive commercial development that supports the private residences, the consortium embarks on the next phase of placemaking with the launch of a multimillion-dollar art programme.
This multi-year programme will introduce both short- and long-term initiatives that residents and visitors can enjoy. They range from paintings to installations by local and international artists to an evolving series of art competitions and events.
“Since the inception of this project, we have always sought to add to the unique character of Holland Village,” says Edward Ng, Executive Director of Projects and Operations at Far East Organization. “One of our objectives is to build upon Holland Village’s existing vibrancy and energy. The introduction of public art and amenities to the neighbourhood would aid us in this endeavour. Public art installations have always had the ability to invoke emotions as well as bolster our personal connections to the spaces that we visit. It is our hope that this initiative can bring lasting value to the neighbourhood and its many patrons.”
In an effort to revitalise Singapore’s oldest bohemian enclave and to foster a wider culture of art appreciation in Singapore, the long-term art programme begins with a public art furniture design competition, MILL, from 1 December 2021.
Curated by homegrown multi-disciplinary design practice FARM, MILL seeks to tap on the community’s creativity and their love of Holland Village to create uniquely designed public benches that celebrate the precinct’s cultural identity and liven its surrounding landscape.
Five winning public designs will be fabricated by local furniture maker Roger&Sons and installed within the village landscape, alongside another five commissioned pieces by established artists and designers. They are Olivia Lee, Hans Tan, Lanzavecchia + Wai, Studio Juju and John McLaughlin from MKPL Architects.
MILL is open for submissions from 1 December 2021 to 30 April 2022. Participation is free. Winners will be announced on 28 May 2022 and be awarded S$2,000 cash prize each. For more details on how to submit, visit: onehollandvillage.com.sg/mill.

To honour Chef James Won’s appointment as Gaggenau’s first Malaysian Culinary Partner, we asked the gastronomic luminaire about parallels between Gaggenau’s ethos and his own practice, his multidimensional vision of Modern Malaysian – and how his early experiences of KFC’s accessible, bold flavours influenced his concept of fine dining.
In design, the concept of absence is particularly powerful – it’s the abundant potential of deliberate non-presence that amplifies the impact of what is. And it is this realm of sophisticated subtraction that Gaggenau’s Dishwasher 400 Series so generously – and quietly – occupies.
