Kirribilli in Sydney welcomes a bright new burger bar that delivers ‘the lot’ on very little

“A burger bar that also sells espresso & cold-drip coffee. That was the client’s brief, hence our challenge was to deliver a concept that spoke not only of the ultimate in fast food but was also serious about coffee.” Explains Ed Kenny of hospitality and retail design powerhouse: Giant Design Consultants.

Situated on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, Kirribilli’s café-by-day then fast-food-by-night offering had only 27 square metres to play with.  Set within a pre-existing art deco building – the lack of on-site storage amenity presented an additional level of complication.

“Our research saw us filtering archetypical details from art deco American diners, through the aesthetics of contemporary coffee/café design,” says Kenny.

What results is an eatery that evokes the spirit of the classic diner culture: high-bar seating, checkerboard patterning and extensive use of polished stainless steel and mirrored surfaces.

Serving up all these standards with a warm lighting palette, leather countertops, moulded timber cladding and some recycled brickwork, imbues the space with a contemporary twist.

From morning through night, the space effortlessly adapts from coffee and pastries to burgers and beers – a customised solution that coupled with retro neon and environmental graphics by Holy Cow, devlivers a rich, casual dining experience.
