Sydney Architecture Festival – What’s Good?!

The Sydney Architecture Festival is back for its 10th year, and returns with an exciting program of talks, events, tours and installations. Here we pick out the top five must sees.

Beginning on September 30 and running through to October 3, World Architecture Day, the ten-year anniversary year of the Sydney Architecture Festival sees the festival partnering with Central Park Sydney. This sees a number of events and activities taking place around the former Carlton United Breweries site and nearby Chippendale. The aim this year is to connect people to place, to transform experiences of architecture and design.

Walking and Talking Chippendale
Hosted by Culture Scouts, a set of Chippendale walking tours aim to show you details of the suburbs you might never seen, and reveal stories about Sydney’s architecture you might never otherwise have heard. Each tour is unique and features a special guest tour guide to help you along the way. Tours include a guide of old to new Chippendale, an off the grid guide to the suburb by Michael Mobbs, and a tour of the suburb’s many emerging galleries.

Pod Life
Architects can be hackers too. Over the Sydney Architecture Festival, you get to walk around inside some the most unique projects from architects who are pushing the boundaries of design, though the creation of new and daring kinds of housing. Carter Williamson Architects and Alexander Symes Architect present different and exciting pod style projects. You can hear the architects talk about their pod designs on the Chippendale Green every morning of the festival.

Innovating Architecture
In partnership with the University of Technology Sydney, the Sydney Architecture Festival is presenting the 9th Association of Architecture Schools of Australasia (AASA) Conference – Project to Practice: Innovating Architecture. What is the future of education and research in architecture? The conference kicks off with a keynote speak from Indy Johar (Architecture 00, UK) and Prof Laura Lee (Carnegie Mellon University, USA).

Stories of Home
Drawing on their long history in Sydney, PTW are collaborating with SAF to present this special exhibition charting the story of apartment living in Sydney over the last hundred years. Exploring a number of PTW’s projects, both built and unbuilt, this exhibition highlights the significance of neighbourhood and community, and the often-underappreciated poetry required to create this.

08:15
Designed and curated exclusively for the Festival by photographer Stephen Pierce, this exhibition showcases the work by a number of urban and architectural photographers. Turning the lens on the ordinary daily rituals of city life, these photos reveal how we connect with one another and the built environment as we move through the city – where were you at 8:15?
