London House

Gordon Ramsay opens his second restaurant in Hong Kong. Tamsin Bradshaw explores the design for the British gastropub-style bar and grill.

Last year, Gordon Ramsay opened Bread Street Kitchen & Bar in collaboration with F&B group Dining Concepts, and last week, the British celebrity chef launched his second restaurant in Hong Kong, London House. Located in East Tsim Sha Tsui’s dining precinct, London House offers all-day dining and live entertainment in a gastropub setting.

Anita Lopez, the in-house interior designer for Dining Concepts, conceived the bar and grill’s look and feel, taking her cues from the streets of London. “We got inspired by London … and its cityscape, we picked up materials and objects that you could easily find around the city, such as subway walls, old bricks and terraces with cast iron balustrades,” she says. “We tried to add all the iconic elements that people would associate with London.”

Decorative items on show at the bar and grill were inspired by the streets of London.

The leather banquettes and subway tiles in British racing green give the space a classically English vibe, while keeping things cosy and comfortable. The tiles actually came from “the same supplier who produces for the London Underground,” says Lopez. “They have an amazing variety of colours and designs. We have a vintage-style brick wall, floor tiles with a classic black and white pattern downstairs, the terrace upstairs, bespoke parquetry in the first floor dining room, and dark wooden paneling around the staircase, bar and facades.”

For Lopez, one of the biggest challenges on the project was how to fit a range of functions on the ground floor, which is only 850 square feet in size. This area needed to house the live music area, “a bar with capacity for 85 people, including seating, and lounge sofa area with a big TV,” she says. “The same space had to work for lunch, dinner and late night.”

The bar and surrounding area were one of the biggest challenges for Lopez and the design team at Dining Concepts.

Lopez and her team made it work, though, and the end result is a fun, easy space that works for everything from family dining to boys’ beer nights.

London House is open daily, from 11am to 12 midnight Monday to Thursday, and 11am to 1pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.
