Desks and dildos, cars and cameras to taps and tongs – the award winners were certainly a varied sampling this year, demonstrating the best-of-the-best in design and excellence in creative engineering.

Attracting over 250 entries, the 2013 Australian International Design Awards (AIDA) proved once again to unearth the very best in design both at home and abroad at the annual recognition program presented by Good Design Australia (GDA).
Blackmagic Cinema Camera – Design Award® of the Year
Happily, the overall winner in 2013 was an Australian video camera that showcases the capability and expertise of local manufacturers in the high quality, highly technical and low volume specialty products marketplace.
The Victoria-designed Blackmagic Cinema Camera puts the technology of a professional film camera within the reach of everyday filmmakers and aspiring directors of photography.

“This product is a showcase of what professional design can do when used effectively. It will revolutionise the film industry,” was the comment from the expert International judging panel.
With 66 products awarded a coveted Design Award Managing Director of GDA, Brandon Gien, celebrated the prevalence of Australian designs.

“Seven out of the 12 products nominated for the top prize were designed in Australia, which is a great result,” Gien said, “We also noticed a trend towards high quality, highly technical products – usually with low production volumes – coming from Australian designers. This is a positive indication that local design firms and manufacturers consider design to be an important value-add in a product’s development cycle.”

Range Rover – Best in Category Automotive and Transport
Also taking awards home were Herman Miller for the Arras Spine in the hotly contested Furniture and Lighting Category, Range Rover for the Automotive Category, “Shift” the ingenious demountable and reconfigurable partition System from Sydney’s Formula Interiors and the Aroha tapware range designed by Methven exclusively for Reece.

Dyson’s Airblade Tap Hand Dryer was awarded the best in its category whilst in a first for the award program over its 55 year history: sex toys from German brand Ovo took home the overall prize for packaging design as well as 3 awards in the Sport and Leisure category.
