Expressions of interest are now open for the 21st Sydney Design Festival 2019, calling for work that responds to the theme of ‘Accessing Design’.
Expressions of interest are now open for the 21st Sydney Design Festival, which is taking place 1 – 10 March 2019 at venues throughout Greater Sydney. Presented by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), the Festival will be 10 days of exhibitions, talks, workshops, events and tours at venues across Sydney.
Spanning generations of designers in its 21-year history, Sydney Design Festival is one of the world’s longest running design festivals. Last year’s program attracted over 58,000 attendees to over 122 events. The 2019 theme, Accessing Design, invites participants to consider their creative practice and the role of design in building an accessible and inclusive world.
MAAS Director Programs & Engagement, Tristan Sharp says, “As Sydney Design Festival turns 21 in 2019 we invite the design community to broaden the definition of design, to consider interdisciplinary creative practices and how the future can be designed to be accessible in all ways.”
Expressions of interest are now open for program contributions across formats as varied as lectures, studio tours, exhibitions, events and networking opportunities.
Design streams include but are not limited to Applied Arts, Architecture, Data Visualisation, Environmental, Experience Design, Landscape, Research and Speculative design, Social Design and User Experience.
A panel of Festival industry advisors will be integral to shaping the Festival program. NSW Architects Registration Board registrar Tim Horton states, “Turning 21 is about coming of age – and that’s exactly what the design community has been waiting for. This year’s theme ‘Accessing Design’ essentially asks – how can design deliver better to those it hasn’t reached? Can design re-balance inequality in the city? Can younger people use design to shape their world? Can better access to design provide greater opportunity for more of us in a growing city?”
A full Festival program will be announced on 16 January 2019.
