Ronnoco Farm: A study in restraint, resilience and rural living

At Ronnoco Farm, Polly Harbison Design brings a considered approach to rural architecture, balancing material honesty, quiet luxury and the realities of life on the land.

Rising from an exposed hinterland ridgeline, Ronnoco Farm is a compelling exercise in architectural restraint. Conceived by Polly Harbison Design, the residence is shaped by a series of stone walls that anchor the building to its surroundings, creating a home that feels intrinsically connected to the landscape. Rather than imposing itself upon the site, the architecture draws from its rugged character, balancing refined modernism with the practical demands of rural living.

At the heart of Ronnoco Farm is a philosophy of crafted modernism, where minimalist forms are given depth through texture, materiality and an intuitive relationship with place. Stone establishes a sense of permanence, while textured render and dark-stained spotted gum joinery introduce warmth and tactile richness. Carefully curated moments of colour punctuate the otherwise restrained palette, lending personality without compromising the architectural clarity. The resulting spaces are sophisticated yet grounded, demonstrating how thoughtful material choices can create richness without excess.

Importantly, the design resists the notion that luxury must come at the expense of practicality. Rural life brings its own rhythms and demands, and Polly Harbison Design has embraced these conditions rather than attempting to conceal them. Materials are selected not simply for their aesthetic appeal but for their resilience and capacity to age gracefully. Surfaces invite use, spaces accommodate everyday activity and the home is designed to evolve alongside its occupants. This considered approach offers an alternative to more precious interpretations of contemporary residential architecture, where beauty is found in authenticity, durability and the marks of lived experience.

It is this balance between refinement and robustness that distinguishes Ronnoco Farm. The residence achieves a sense of quiet luxury without ostentation, creating an environment that is simultaneously protective and open to its rural setting. Its architectural language is deliberate but never rigid, allowing the textures of the landscape and the realities of daily life to become integral to the experience of the home. In doing so, Polly Harbison Design demonstrates that exceptional residential architecture need not compete with its surroundings to make a lasting impression.

Recognised as The Living Space Winner at the INDE.Awards 2026, with category partner Gaggenau, Ronnoco Farm exemplifies the thoughtful approach to architecture and design celebrated by the awards across the Indo-Pacific. Through its sensitivity to place, enduring material palette and commitment to functional beauty, the project offers a compelling vision of contemporary rural living, one where architectural excellence is measured as much by how a home is lived in as by how it looks.
