Thousands of unexpected objects, arranged in creative and clever ways. The We Make Carpets installation is sure to inspire for the NGV Triennial.
The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has announced its latest children’s exhibit featuring Dutch art collective We Make Carpets.
In an Australian first, the artists will be creating mural-sized displays and interactive installations that will encourage people of all ages to engage with household items.
The installation titled Hands On: We Make Carpets for Kids, has been commissioned as a site-specific artwork. Key to the work of We Make Carpets is using everyday, household items in new and unexpected ways. Part of the playfulness and magic inherent in the collective’s work is the way in which thousands of seemingly insignificant objects come together.
Working with the power of numbers, thousands of household objects such as foam pool noodles, nylon rope, kitchen sponges and plastic pegs are carefully arranged to create impressive displays for everyone to view and take inspiration.
‘In an unconventional approach, We Make Carpets push the boundaries in their contemporary practice, repurposing everyday objects into playful and highly tactile compositions for kids and families. We hope visitors will be inspired by the ingenuity and inventive practice of the collective as they interact with the artworks’, said Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV.
Hands On: We Make Carpets for Kids is running as part of the NGV Triennial, which runs from 15 December 2017 – 15 April 2018 at NGV International.
