Sydney’s Point 2 Design is the dynamic duo of Sarah Gavan and Jess Enander, a fresh faced studio with a wealth of creative experience
Your top 3 Influences
- Travel – We are both well travelled, Sarah has spent time living and designing in London and Jess is born and bred in Sweden. We constantly draw inspiration from what we have seen and continue to seek out new impressions from all over the world.
- Clients/ People – our clients and meeting new people is a constant source of inspiration. Different perspectives and ideas continue to challenge our way of thinking and how we design.
- Scandinavian design – we are passionate about Scandinavian style and introduce the simple design ethos into our own work. We also make sure we stay up to date with new trends, products and emerging designers coming out of Scandinavia.
The moment you knew you wanted to be a designer.
Sarah: For as long as I remember, I have had a natural flair for all things creative…. I always knew I’d be in the creative field. Interiors particularly inspired me and I chose to study interior design, and been loving it ever since.
Favourite local landmark/building.
Jess: Coming from Sweden it would be hard to go past the Opera House. Cliche as it may be, the clean lines, beautiful shape and innovative concept confirms its status as a key icon for Sydney recognised worldwide.
Favourite material.
We love working with classic, textured and natural materials.
Currently we love using wide board Oak timber floors & silver travertine.
Favourite international landmark/building.
Jess: There are so many, but on a recent trip to Helsinki for the Design Capital 2012, I was blown away by the Rock Church (Temppeliaukio Kirkko) which is a modern church built into a huge granite rock in the middle of the city.
Biggest career moment.
The moment when the builder on our residential job handed over the keys to a completed new build house to our client. We were involved in every stage of the project and after nearly 2 years in construction it was very satisfying seeing the end result and the happy clients moving into their dream home.
Dream project to work on (real or imaginary).
Our recent Beach House project was amazing for us, and we would love to again work on a holiday home or resort in a tropical location. To be able to really focus on designing for lifestyle and custom make the interiors to suit how the client intends to use the space is what we do best. Having created a home that is functional, innovative that is designed to suit the clients individual requirements gives us a great sense of satisfaction.
Dream person to collaborate with.
Kelly Hoppen & Alvar Aalto
Favourite decade of design.
Mid century anything, especially Scandinavian furniture and architecture.
Favourite chair.
Lamino chair by Yngve Ekstrom (Swedese) and a recent favourite is Chair 170 in black stain by Takahashi Asako which we just recently put into the Newport Beach House.
#1 concern for the design industry in the coming decade.?
We think the biggest issue is the influx of cheap replica furniture appearing on Australian shores. Whilst these products and stores allow everyone access to designer furniture, we need to ensure that emerging furniture and creative designers in Australia have a market to sell their products to continue to cultivate and develop young Australian designers and the design industry. We love the idea of initiatives like the Eveleigh Markets that provide a platform for young Australian designers to make a name for themselves.
Which items in the workplace can you not live without?
0.2 thickness black pens. They even provided the inspiration for our Business name Point 2 Design! And coffee of course to help us get through those early morning site visits.
The most unusual/interesting thing about the way you work.
Whilst we share similar interests, aesthetics and goals, which was the main reason we took the leap to start Point 2 Design, we have complimentary strengths, which we feel is the secret to our success.
We personally oversee every stage of a project and have a very collaborative process between ourselves our clients and other consultants. Jess’s big picture approach combined with Sarah’s incredible attention to detail creates the perfect balance.
