A research centre housing 1,000 scientists has taken out top honours at the Brisbane leg of the Queensland Regional Architecture Awards.
May 11th, 2011
The Australian Institute of Architects’ Queensland Regional Architecture Awards travelled to Brisbane on Friday 6 May, with HASSELL’s Ecosciences Precinct at Dutton Park awarded the John Dalton Award for Building of the Year.
This multi-faceted building brings together 1,000 scientists from 8 locations into one research environment.
The 50,000sqm space provides collaborative work areas and state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities across 3 distinct wings, separated by landscaped courtyards.
“This is commercial architecture on a grand scale,” said Queensland Awards Jury Director Malcolm Middleton.
“The highly rational arrangement of various laboratories, office spaces and support areas belies the complexity of the facility’s program and the skilful hand of its architectural guidance.”
House of the Year was awarded to DHAN plus on North Stradboke Island by Donovan Hill, described by the judges as “a true collaboration between the architect and builder, resulting in a delightful outcome”.
“A collection of ’territories’ created through a dynamic balance between the pre-fabricated and site built elements provide flexible occupation,” said the jury.
The Queensland Architecture Awards will be awarded in Brisbane on Friday 24 June, with all regional commendations to date in the running.
