Gehry Bench

In yet another powerful collaboration, aluminium chair manufactuer, Emeco have again joined forces with international design icon Frank Gehry to produce a unique large-scale bench.

The piece, named Tuyomyo (Spanish for ‘yours and mine’) will be presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan this April, moving to New York in May.

The second time that Gehry and Emeco have cooperated on a project, this new piece uses 80% recycled aluminium components and employs CNC and aircraft manufacturing technology and hand craftsmanship – combining Gehry’s intuitive design and Emeco’s expertise with aluminium.

Gehry’s mandate for the design was simple: “The form has to be free and light. It must be structural, and at the same time poetic. A little dangerous.”

The result is a sculptural bench, a new form that pushes the boundaries of aluminium manufacturing (size and tempering) – with applications for future use.

The piece will raise funds for the Heridtary Disease Foundation (HDF) – a cause the designer is deeply passionate about. HDF aims to cure genetic illness by supporting basic biomedical research and uses Huntington’s Disease as its model.

The sculptured one-of-a-kind model will have an estimated value of around $250,000 and has Frank Gehry’s signature etched permanently into the aluminum.
