Poggenpohl kitchens are so modern, so ‘of the moment’, that it comes as somewhat of a shock to discover that the company dates back to 1892.
December 19th, 2008
Perhaps less surprising is the fact that its founder, Friedemir Poggenpohl, was a German master cabinetmaker with a simple mission ‘to improve the kitchen’ – an aim that is as apparent in the company’s products today as it wasover 110 years ago.
Just when you think the kitchen can’t possibly be improved upon, or progressed, that is precisely what Poggenpohl does. In 1928, Poggenpohl introduced the Reform Kitchen with its connecting units and integrated storage space.
Then, in 1950, the Form 1000 was introduced. It was the first modern fitted kitchen, as we now know them. Poggenpohl worked closely with appliance manufacturers of the day to integrate its wall and base units with the early versions of must-have laboursaving devices for modern homeowners.
In 2005, PLUSMODO illustrated how Poggenpohl still dominates the kitchen industry through revolutionary design and product development. The result of a year-long collaboration with worldrenowned Spanish furniture designer Jorge Pensi, PLUSMODO meets his desire to create ‘a poetic dialogue between display and concealment’ by marrying open and closed functional areas.
Poggenpohl and Pensi believe that many of today’s modern kitchen gadgets, china, glassware, saucepans and utensils, while still functional everyday objects, are themselves works of art and deserve to be seen in all their glory. Lighting has been used to subtly highlight design elements and display areas, while also providing optimal illumination for food preparation areas.
Clearly, PLUSMODO has struck a chord, receiving four awards, including theGood Design Award from the ChicagoAthenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, an iF product design award and a Red Dot design award.
“Poggenpohl has been at the forefront of kitchen design since the 19th century, ensuring the highest standards of fittings and construction, pioneering the use of new materials and technologies, and continually testing the boundaries of design to improve the kitchen.”
