Design After Life

Design After Life

Brisbane Architect, Pete McFarlane, creates designs for the departed.

As the only architect/stonemason in Australia, Peter McFarlane certainly has the market cornered as he designs and creates unique memorial designs.

Aiming to present an informed, creative and sensitive alternative to other memorial companies within and outside Australia, MacFarlane says that each memorial is personally designed and crafted, and represents his innovative approach to design.

“I agree it is an unusual area of design and my compositions explore the familiarity of life’s certainties,” he says.

Using a range of new and old materials MacFarlane combines the knowledge of his two disciplines to create memorials that represent “ancient and historic artisan skills” and “edge driven ideas”.

His memorials usually take a very architectural form but are often challenged by his desire to layer meaning, story and history. “By far the hardest is coming up with an idea that is relevant, appropriate and progressive.”

MacFarlane says he hopes his contemporary designs will produce memorials that successfully represent the past, are experienced in the present and that inspire the future.
