In recent years, hip retail and F&B establishments, design studios and art galleries have breathed new life into Singapore’s ethnic quarter of Kampong Glam.

One of the most recent entries into the neighbourhood is Hotel Clover, a 27-room boutique hotel housed in a quartet of 2-storey conserved shophouses that were constructed between 1840 and 1960.

A large wooden communal table anchors the hotel’s lobby, encouraging guests to mingle over breakfast and coffee.

A neutral colour scheme and clean modern lines strike a good balance with the curated selection of vintage furnishings – a restored hair salon chair in one corner for example, an old gramophone in another, and in yet another a quartet of steel-lined chairs. The same design aesthetic continues in the rooms, which deftly combine contemporary furnishings and modern amenities with vintage accessories and detailing.

Additionally, a variety of open-to-sky spaces – from the backyard to the air well – draw natural light and fresh air into the hotel. The air well has also been converted into a courtyard with a lush vertical garden where guests can unwind, and contemplate the locale’s past and present.
