Design Green! Skycourts & Skygardens is a 3-week-long event at the National Design Centre spanning three integrated components: ‘The Exhibition’, ‘The Discussion’, and ‘The Installation’.
It is curated by Pomeroy Studio – indeed, the very idea for this exposition sprang forth from the studio’s founder, Jason Pomeroy’s latest published title, Skycourts & Skygardens: Greening the Urban Habitat.
“The seed of this exhibition started with my book, exploring the role of skycourts and skygardens within the urban habitat,” says Jason. “The thesis has led to our continued research in Singapore – an environment that lends itself well to the subject matter given the City State’s high-rise nature.”

Several elements of the book are ‘brought to life’ in the exposition. For one, in ‘The Exhibition’, the studio has collaborated with Raffles Design Institute’s 3rd year students to build scaled models from the book’s case study projects.

In ‘The Discussion’, Malaysian eco-architect Ken Yeang, who wrote the foreword to Jason’s book, will also be part of an informative discussion during the exposition. Arup, Grant Associates, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Foster & Partners, and a host of other global consultants who have been featured in the book, will also be present to give addresses or partake in masterclass tutorials.

In addition, ‘The Installation’ will explore many ideas found within the book through a net zero energy designed rooftop intervention featuring green walls as well as solar cell canopies designed to power the various community activities being held.
The Installation features the second edition of Transitional __ by creative place making agency Shophouse & Co, who are leveraging the untapped potential of the rooftop and turning it into a social space in the sky. Visitors can expect installations, performances, exhibitions, talks and workshops produced in collaboration with artists, communities, schools, organisations, design agencies, and businesses who are ‘doing good through design’. For example, Shophouse & Co will be partnering with Edible Gardens to create edible landscaping, and will also be running workshops to show the public how they can create their very own sky gardens.
