The other short-listed submissions, selected from 111 entries, were from: Chan Sau Yan Associates in collaboration with Lekker Design (Singapore), DP Architects (Singapore), Ho + Hou Studio Architects (Taiwan), Studio Milou Architecture (France).

Although Smart Design did not make it to the next stage of the competition, (the top-winner was Studio Milou Architecture), the international jurors praised the submission, stating:

“There is an inherent understanding of the constraints of existing spaces and the designer has proposed imaginative uses for spaces that need to be retained.”

The competition was organised by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA), in association with the Singapore Institute of Architects and was launched in February to seek world-class design ideas to transform the two buildings.

The Gallery is scheduled for completion in 2012.
