Kustom Timber's new Mornington showroom by Studio Griffiths is a stunning display of how simple, refined surfaces, clever display setups and a minimal, well-selected array of furniture can take a space from pleasant to extraordinary.

In Kustom Timber’s new Mornington Showroom, Melbourne-based designers Studio Griffiths prove it certainly is what’s on the surface(s) that counts.

Bringing together a penchant for high-quality timber surface craftsmanship and an eye for beautiful furniture specification, Studio Griffiths has ensured the showroom is a sublime retail experience.

Both horizontal and vertical planes display the timber floorboards. Black-framed timber displays with extending arms are quickly interchangeable thanks to magnetic mechanisms, allowing staff to speedily alternate patterns, woodgrains and tonal finishes.

“Our key innovation was inspired by the classic swivel mirror to develop the timber display pivot screens encased in blackened steel to create a repetitious rhythm within and a sense of three dimensionality which tends to be lacking in most timber flooring showrooms,” says Studio Griffiths creative director Gillianne Griffiths.

The showroom’s floors are a patchwork of Kustom Timber, separated by lines of inlaid bronze. The checkerboard floor displays the spectrum of natural hues and patterns – from herringbone and chevron to more elaborate variations.

“Our Mornington space enables us to convey the ‘big picture’ of our offering like an all- surround giant timber jigsaw,” says co-founder and co-director of Kustom Timber, Mark Chaz.

“It’s no wonder Studio Griffiths were shortlisted for an Australian Interior Design Award in the retail category this year,” he adds.

The existing warehouse is a generous space with an abundance of natural light. The timber is juxtaposed and emphasised by the addition of a charcoal terrazzo that adds texture and materiality.

Plants drape over a suspended square planter centrepiece that hangs above the centre of the showroom. Under the greenery, a finessed selection of seating helps elevate the space, including a Ploum Sofa by E. and R. Bouroullec for Ligne Roset.

Kustom Timber offers five distinct engineered hardwood collections with over 35 unique shades and finishes. Its custom stains and premium oil and lacquer finishes are the centrepiece of the space, and bespoke tones can be devised upon requests.

Studio Griffiths has done what it does best, developing a highly-tactile, welcoming retail space that displays the very best that Kustom Timber has to offer.
