The idea for the Collection dates back to 1952, when George Nelson wrote in his introduction to the Herman Miller catalogue of “the continuing creation of a permanent collection designed to meet fully the requirements for modern living.”

Nelson established a program and philosophy for the Collection that is being continued today by Herman Miller’s USA team. Classic pieces from Herman Miller’s archives have been updated to meet modern standards of sustainability and durability and restored to their designers’ original intent.

As the Collection grows it will be added to with further archival designs, as well as new products developed in collaboration with contemporary designers – a true celebration of Herman Miller’s design philosophy, linking the company’s past, present and future.
