An open studio space that confidently fronts the street within Richmond’s design precinct is where the refined work of a young architecture practice is changing the face of Melbourne’s urban fabric. Luke Fry sits down with the directors of Nixon Tulloch Fortey Architecture to learn more about their emerging practice.

Since learning their craft in the creative spaces of some of Melbourne’s most renowned architectural practices Brett, Emma and George are making some impressive movements of their own.

Exposure and experience in every facet of award winning projects has set the scene for the success of their own practice, established in the winter of 2006.

The small nature of the practice places it in a unique yet challenging position, allowing them to passionately embrace the smallest of projects or to easily collaborate with other practices when a project exceeds their immediate resources.

This approach allows the directors to be heavily involved in the day to day operations of the practice, as well as each and every project from concept to completion.

During my chat with the close knit team I was privileged enough to view a series of projects yet to be seen by the general public, and I can confidently say the future for this modest trio is nothing short of bright.

Simple forms are treated with a dose of minimal elegance, further refined through quality materials and details, which are sure to get some chins wagging.
