“New Zealand, the place where we studied and started practice, is right at the end of the logistics and distribution chains of the world,” says Andrew Tu’inukuafe in this latest STORIESINDESIGN episode. “You couldn’t get any further from where things are produced, so, naturally, things are expensive. To make projects economically feasible and also great design… it’s quite hard work, but it does hone your creative skills!”
Tu’inukuafe and Barrington Gohns, colleagues at Warren and Mahoney, joined me for STORIESINDESIGN having recently worked together as Guest Editors on Indesign magazine. They guided Issue #96, which focused on ‘The Regions’ – that is, questions about what makes architecture and design in our wider Asia-Pacific region distinctive. What ties it to Australia, New Zealand-Aotearoa and the Pacific nations?
Tu’inukuafe’s comment above addresses the economically distinctive dimensions of design here, while the conversation more widely covered climate, culture and history in shaping the built environment – including elements of vernacular architecture across the Pacific.

The Warren and Mahoney pair were in Sydney together and joined the podcast in-person at a rather stylish, vintage audio within the architecturally significant Fisher Library at the University of Sydney. They discussed the experience of editing a design magazine, how that process relates to their own creative practice and what marks out Warren and Mahoney’s design approach.
