Soul Studio: A Cultural Sanctuary for Creativity and Connection

Designed by Palinda Kannangara Architects, Soul Studio reimagines the relationship between architecture, creativity and community, offering an intimate yet dynamic cultural space where artistic expression and social connection flourish.

At the intersection of creativity, community and nature, Soul Studio by Palinda Kannangara Architects offers a compelling exploration of how architecture can nurture cultural exchange. Conceived as an extension of an architect’s studio, the project transforms a private collection of music and books into an immersive social space, inviting people to gather, collaborate and engage with the arts.

Recognised as The Social Space Winner at the INDE.Awards 2026, Soul Studio demonstrates the potential of architecture to facilitate meaningful human interaction while remaining deeply connected to its cultural and environmental context. Its considered approach to shared experience reflects the evolving role of social spaces within contemporary architecture and design.

Rather than prescribing a singular purpose, Palinda Kannangara Architects has conceived Soul Studio as a collection of interconnected volumes, each accommodating different forms of creative expression. A lower pavilion provides a flexible setting for exhibitions and workshops, while the upper levels introduce spaces dedicated to music, film, recording and guest residencies.

This layering of functions creates an architecture of discovery, where movement through the building reveals opportunities for both spontaneous encounters and quieter moments of reflection. The balance between communal gathering and individual retreat is particularly significant within its dense urban setting, demonstrating how spatial flexibility can support an evolving cultural programme.

Central to the design is a sensitive dialogue between the built environment and the natural landscape. Existing jackfruit and coconut trees remain integral to the spatial composition, providing shade and establishing a distinctive microclimate. Courtyards and terraces dissolve conventional boundaries between inside and outside, while a reflective stone pool draws inspiration from the traditional pokuna, introducing a contemplative element that connects the project to its cultural heritage.

Soul Studio’s architectural character emerges through a restrained yet expressive material palette. Recycled stone, salvaged elements, exposed masonry and porous cement block façades establish a tactile richness while reinforcing the project’s commitment to resource-conscious design.

These materials are complemented by passive environmental strategies that encourage natural ventilation, filter daylight and improve thermal comfort. The result is an architecture in which sustainability is not treated as an addition, but as an intrinsic part of the spatial experience.

For Palinda Kannangara Architects, the project illustrates how thoughtful material selection, environmental responsiveness and adaptable programming can contribute to a richer understanding of contemporary social architecture.

As The Social Space Winner, supported by category partner Maxton Fox, Soul Studio holds a distinctive place among the projects celebrated at the INDE.Awards 2026. Recognising outstanding architecture and design across the Indo-Pacific, the awards highlight projects that advance the region’s design discourse. Soul Studio exemplifies this ambition, demonstrating how architecture can create the conditions for creativity, cultural exchange and genuine connection.
