Singapore Institute of Architects announced a total of 31 winners for this year’s Architecture Design Awards. Entries were judged based on their originality and innovation, sensitivity to context, sustainability, response to climate and users’ needs, and elegance of construction and detail.
At the same time, the Awards also introduced a new category: Social/Humanitarian Architecture. The intention is to recognise members who are able to tackle human-centric, social issues, overcome tight budgets and limited resources for greater good.
The highest accolade, the Building Of The Year award went to two projects: Jewel Changi Airport by Safdie Architects which was also a winner in the Commercial – Mixed Developments category, and Sky Green by WOHA Architects, which also earned an award under the Commercial – Overseas Commercial Projects category.
On Jewel Changi Airport, the jury shared that it “sets new benchmarks globally in the reimagination of airport terminals as major public attractions.”
“It is a power public and social space where the world meets Singapore. The Jewel has attracted many and offered everyone enjoyment and the marvel of something new. Architecture, landscape and experiential design play integral roles to the success of the communal space as seen by crowds of visitors throughout the day.”
Sky Green is the first sustainable mixed-use residential development in the heart of Taichung city and was recognised as a new high-rise residential typology.
“The high-rise greenery on various facades via creepers, sky gardens and balconies create a distinctive biophilic environment which sees a green plot ratio of 320%. It is also the pioneering development where floor area is dedicated to these communal interaction sky-decks, which terrace up the building.”
“Sky Green has also become an exemplary prototype for high-rise, high-density green living in Taichung and was used as a project reference in the re-conceptualisation and revision of local city planning codes in 2019.”
