Lighting heritage architecture without competing with it

Exterior lighting can transform the way architecture is experienced after dark. When the building has heritage significance, however, successful lighting design is as much about restraint as illumination.

Unlike a new project, where lighting can be considered alongside the architecture from the earliest stages, heritage buildings come with an existing material language, architectural hierarchy and cultural significance.

Any new intervention therefore needs to work with the building rather than against it.

In the upcoming CPD Live session From Façade to Footpath – Considerations for Effective Exterior Lighting Design, architects and designers will explore how external lighting can reveal and enhance heritage architecture while protecting the qualities that make it significant.

Presented by Euroluce, the session examines principles including minimal intervention, reversible installation and protection of significant architectural fabric.

It will also consider how different heritage materials respond to light, the factors influencing luminaire selection and positioning, and the ways lighting can be used to emphasise architectural elements without overpowering the building itself.

The presentation will be led by Joshua Anstis, Business Development Manager at Euroluce, and Daniel Berenger, Regional Sales Manager Australia and New Zealand at Lumascape, bringing experience from commercial, civic, heritage and major public projects.

From the Sydney Opera House and 1 Martin Place to Council House Perth and St Georges Cathedral, their combined project experience demonstrates the range of architectural conditions exterior lighting designers are required to navigate.

For architects working with heritage buildings, the session offers practical guidance for achieving the balance between preservation, visual impact and contemporary lighting performance.
