In a beautiful, personal short film as part of CDK Stone’s Designer Lens Series, Beck explains how she is drawn to create interiors that combine form and function, using colour and texture in ways that are wholly representative of the people who will live or work in a space.
“I create highly considered, warm and liveable interiors,” she explains. “It is about functionality but also how a space makes you feel.”
Studio Beck, founded in 2020 at Mermaid Beach provides interior design for both residential and commercial spaces. The inspiration for that design can “come from anywhere,” Beck says.
It could be a colour combination, a painting she glimpses, or the experiences had while travelling.
“I might be admiring things in a lobby and taking in ways that people have layered different materials in that space.”
Translating the external world into the internal one is a subtle exercise. The Gold Coast is known for its holiday energy, for beaches and outdoor adventures and relaxing in the sun. Rather than recreating a coastal chic aesthetic, Beck translates the character of the region into artefacts, textures and visual imagery indoors.
Similarly, growing up with a father that was an opal miner has resulted in an affinity for stone.
She says it is one of her favourite materials for its tactile qualities, uniqueness and the sense of luxury it brings into an interior.
“I love that no two slabs are the same. Natural stone is like a piece of artwork,” Beck explains. ‘It is one of the biggest tools I use to create feelings in a space.”
The material can bring richness into a simple space, she says.
This same sensibility of the beauty found in the substance of the Earth is expressed
in her new Foundations scupltural ceramics range. Beck explains that while visiting Barcelona, she found herself in a small ceramics studio and was intrigued by the process of making original artefacts through the work of an artisan’s hands and the materials of clay and glazes.
Foundations was born from that encounter and presents a range of objects for interiors that are striking, original and accessible.
“I sometimes struggled to find smaller pieces, or artwork that is achievable with the client budget,” reflects Beck.
“I have always been drawn to ceramics. I love things that are made from natural materials and that are very tactile, I love things I can touch, and I also love colour”
The second episode of this Designer Lens Series will follow Beck’s visit to Saturday InDesign starting with the installations inspired by Milan at the CDK Stone Showroom in Alexandria. Along with DECO and Havwoods and CDK Stone’s own beautiful products, the stunning interactive exhibit will showcase the ways timeless materials, geological forms and creative talent can inspire elegant aesthetics for contemporary interiors.
This reflects Beck’s own design ethos, which is infused with her love of art and story and demonstrated through her appreciation of craftsmanship and materials in creating interiors with character.
“I love layering the old with the new. Things with history and patina make homes more interesting.”
