Sydney’s back lanes become Art galleries, thanks to Wishart design studio

The City of Sydney has put into place an initiative to re-vitalise the laneways of Sydney, often dirty and unappealing to pedestrians in contrast to Melbourne’s bustling back lanes.

As part of the project, multi-disciplinary studio Wishart Design created and managed the installation of a permanent exhibition space and mural late last year in Albion Place.

The new laneway gallery displays up to 30 works of art, which are updated every few months, and along with the mural, creates an environment with a shifting understanding of the function of a laneway, and the possibilities of a gallery.

The graphic wall embraces elements of the cityscape, playing with components to provide a contrast to the surrounding environment. The space has already proven engaging to the public, drawing them in from the adjoining George and Kent Streets.
