Designer Rugs’ latest collection MINDSCAPE by Gavin Harris is a daring exploration of shape, colour and texture.
Designed specifically with contemporary commercial spaces and cutting-edge residential applications in mind, Harris’ MINDSCAPE collection brings a new dimension to Designer Rugs’ design collaborations.
Harris is the latest in a long and prolific list of designers to have launched a celebrated collection with Designer Rugs, and it was a natural partnership given the much-admired interior and industrial designer won the Designer Rugs Evolve rug design competition in 2010. He has since continued to design custom rugs for commercial projects including State Plus and Astrazeneca through his position as Design Director of futurespace. “Clients wanted statement pieces that functioned as more than a rug; they wanted pieces that told stories or reflected the company’s ambitions,” Harris explains.
For his MINDSCAPE collection Harris identified a series of shapes that could be used together or independently of each other, and then considered how texture, pattern and colour could create drama and interest. “This collection is diverse in design, but when viewed together is cohesive and looks like it belongs,” says Harris.
The collection includes the following six shapes or styles:
Lateral
Lateral’s hexagon shape is comprised of elongated strips of greens, blues and greys. “The lines create a sense of movement in space while the green is both relaxing and invigorating.”
Matrix
Matrix is an exploration of texture, with thick felted yarn on one section, and a cutting detail of the squares in both sunken and raised waves on the other.
Molecule
Molecule plays with the hexagon shape in both form and pattern. In triplicate, the hexagon takes on the form of a molecule while the loop-pile shadow line adds an architectural detail.
Prism
Using colour and shapes, Harris transforms a flat object with an almost three-dimensional visual effect. The use of cut and loop pole in fine lines creates additional drama.
Solar
Solar reflects Harris’ fascination with the solar system and circles. “It felt like the sun and earth with its gravitational pull in the gradation,” Harris says.
Reflectors
Reflectors has a simple gradation in tone and form that creates a subtle three-dimensional effect. “I see this rug used like a diamond in a room, not a square,” Harris explains.
