The 2025 Australian Architecture Conference has just wrapped up and I was lucky enough to spend some time getting to know Vinu Daniel, the founder of Wallmakers who was in Sydney to give the keynote UTZON Lecture. The self-described “vagabond architect” has been recognised with many awards, while the practice was selected by ArchDaily in its list of 20 Young Practices of 2020. Daniel was also the youngest Indian architect invited to be a TED Talk speaker and, just days after the Conference speech, he joined me at The Commons in Surry Hills, Sydney for this interview.
Daniel’s starting point for the lecture – the rigid binary between traditionalist conservationism and forward-looking modernism – also provided our way into the podcast conversation. We discussed mud and earth architecture, his concept of ‘linear practice’ and the general approach of undermining hierarchy in architectural practice.
