Sustainability Summit Panel #1: The future of aged care design

The Sustainability Awards and Summit are brought to you by Architecture & Design. For over a decade and a half, Architecture & Design has hosted the Sustainability Summit – a beacon of insight into sustainable practices, and this year promises to be no different as it once again takes centre stage, this time on an engaging virtual platform.

What is the future of modern, sustainable aged care design? This will be the topic of our first panel of the 2024 Sustainability Summit, one that is fast becoming both a point of interest for all levels of government as well as timely reminder that aged care is set to be a significant part of government spending in the second half of this century.

According to the Australian government’s 2023 Intergenerational Report: ‘Australia’s population will continue to age over the next 40 years. The number of Australians aged 65 and over will more than double and the number aged 85 and over will more than triple. The number of centenarians is expected to increase six-fold.’

So, the warnings are loud and clear, but will our leaders – and those invested in redesigning our cities – take heed?

To discuss this, on the first panel we’ll have Phillippa Carnemolla, Associate Professor School of School of Built Environment from the University of Technology Sydney, Tara Veldman, architect, and designer at BLP, Nicki Doyle, KPMG Australia’s National Sector Leader, Clint Field, National Sales & Marketing Manager from Nero, Siniat National Architectural Manager Nazli Almasirad and Ross Baynham from Alspec thrash out their vision for the future of sustainable aged care design in this country.

So how can Australia’s housing contribute to a more sustainable aged care system?

According to Phillippa Carnemolla, “Whether providing aged care in an apartment that is up three flights of stairs, a home which is not properly maintained, or even coordinating care for an older person who does not have a stable or secure home, it is clear that Australia’s housing has a significant role to play in the sustainability of Australia’s aged care system.”

This panel represents some of the most accomplished leaders in the sustainability field who will explain the current climate of the aged care design industry and plant the seeds to help the next generation achieve a much more diverse and sustainable future.
