In the past, installers tended to baulk at the task of installing drainage systems alongside vertical surfaces like walls and floor junctions. Realising that standard rigid flanges were not suitable for such tight spots – and understanding the importance of meeting waterproofing requirements – they chose to move the drain to a more accessible position.
In this way, even though the initial specification was left unfulfilled, all parties were left safe in the knowledge that the finished bathroom was functional and fully compliant.
Stormtech’s FlexiFlange
The good news, for not just installers but also specifiers and homeowners, is that this type of cautious approach is no longer necessary. Thanks to Stormtech’s FlexiFlange, work of this type can be completed simply and effectively.
A game-changing innovation – that sits comfortably alongside the company’s various other industry-firsts – the FlexiFlange is manufactured in Australia from robust, leak-resistant, Best Environmental Practice PVC.

This material choice is central to its performance. Unlike standard flanges, it is extremely flexible and therefore able to bend up vertical surfaces without compromising performance or structural integrity by becoming the transition material instead of relying on a bond breaker or transition tape.
Importantly, such installations maintain the minimum 50 mm membrane to flange adhesion area, as required by manufacturers and exceeds the minimums of the National Construction Code (NCC).
The FlexiFlange is made from Vinyl Council-certified Best Environmental Practice PVC, a ‘deemed-to-satisfy’ compliant material under AS 3740, AS 3500.2 and AS 4654.1. WaterMark certified and compliant in accordance with AS 4858, it is suitable for waterproofing applications.
Its features include a large diameter, which accommodates variations in substrate contours and penetrations; a clearly marked cuttable area which is unique for a floor flange, which can be trimmed to suit specific installation requirements; and an ultra-thin profile, which helps simplify and streamline the installation process.

Built-in flood testing
On top of this, thanks to the inclusion of a removable plug and integrated water-level gauge, the FlexiFlange helps simplify the flood testing process. Further, this integrate plug prevents debris from entering the drain during construction. The connection between the riser and flange helps protect the waterproofing membrane from tearing and stress, while the slip-joint riser allows for natural building movement but can also be PVC solvent cemented where jurisdictions prevent slip joints.
Finally, for added installation accuracy, the flange includes 1mm and 2mm film gauges to guide the application of the membrane to the correct thickness, and engraved measurement markings that assist with measuring the outlet centre.
Fully patented and the first product of its kind, it is available across Australia now. An organisation with a well-earned reputation for innovation, and a string of industry-firsts including the invention of the linear drain to its name, Stormtech is delighted to include the FlexiFlange in its portfolio.
