The British designer’s first foray into textile design for Instyle’s ecoustic® range

Michael Young‘s work for Instyle is the first time he’s applied his Industrial Art philosophy to textile design. His collection for Instyle’s ecoustic® range allowed him to explore the unique capabilities of fabric and printing.

Young could transfer his experience as a designer of very functional objects to his work for Instyle.  “It’s great to work on a material that has performance and can contribute physically and not just visually,” he said about the acoustic functionality of Instyle’s panels and screen products.

Young used his 3D experience to explore the visual capabilities of the ecoustic® textiles. “I’m a big fan of warmth in a room, be it through materials or patterns. I think pattern adds dimension to a room.”

The patterns in his ecoustic® range are mosaic-like, and seem almost like optical illusions in the way shapes almost seem to tesselate but don’t, and in the way that numerous different patterns emerge, depending on where you focus.

Young’s 2D patterns have depth. He calls this, “A visual process. A journey in scales and fractals.” The inspiration was taken from the computer programming he uses to build in 3D.

He also admits to a maturation in his relationship with colour. “When I started I was in love with the ’60s and bright colours, but I have learnt they are not the best to live with, so I constantly explore neutral colours that stand the test of time.”

Instyle’s ecoustic® collection has GreenTagCert™ Level A certification. Their products are suitable for screen, partition, wall and ceiling applications in residential and commercial spaces.

Michael Young’s TRI, META and DISC ranges give depth and fractalised beauty to these eco acoustic panel and screen products.
