polytec’s Chromaboard Brings Higher Ground to Life

DesignOffice has reimagined the former power station, Higher Ground, into an all-day hospitality destination in Melbourne’s CBD, complete with polytec finishes for that final touch.
Polytec’s Black Chromaboard was used in the Higher Ground project in order to exceed the ordinary, creating seductive dark tones in the large space. Chromaboard is suited to routing and further embellishment using varnish, wax, or other coatings to create unique effects, without the need for sanding.
DesignOffice’s work sees six newly designed levels added to the original structure of the building – with the resulting tiered platforms creating an intimate layered atmosphere, evoking the feeling of a hotel lobby and generating a vivacious environment from morning to night.
The new design utilises the existing brick and concrete work to create a vast palette of textures and hues, contrasting with the depth of the existing materials and maintaining the architectural integrity of the building. The project’s brief was for intimacy in a large space, which was achieved by adding multiple levels and layers lining the perimeter of the inventive edifice.
The rich and tactile palette combines terrazzo, cork, painted steel, stone, black fibreboard and solid timbers to define and anchor each setting. Layers of planting, rugs, furniture and lighting inhabit the levels to provide a range of seating options for customers from morning through to the evening.
