That they come from such humble beginnings, selling jewellery in the 80’s at a small stand in Sydney’s Paddington markets, is hard to believe when looking at Dinosaur Designs latest collection. Black and White is the latest collection by Louise Olsen from the jewellery and homeware company and focuses on the strength of a minimal palette. Exploring the art and simplicity that comes from only using black and white.
The curated collection, showcases both jewellery and homewares. We see dramatic pieces all of which contain their own intrinsic power. The photography of the pieces, done by the talented Bart Celstino, would not feel out of place in a gallery, a testament to the art and design that has gone into the pieces.
Homeware designs such as the Bow and Offering Vase are sculptural artworks in and of themselves, the white and black having been artfully applied to accentuate this fact.
With the jewellery pieces we can see how the accents of sterling silver give a metallic highlight to the solid black and chalk. When worn, the New Bow, Flute and Disc Bangles create strong sculptural looks, as they are designed to do. The Carved Necklace, makes a statement piece for the neck while new earrings such as the Crescent combine polished resin and silver for a more elevated look.
Lousie Olsen says “The Black and White collection reaffirms our love for the arts. Stephen and I began as artists, and art is at the core of each of our creations at Dinosaur Designs. We endeavour to create timeless pieces of value, objects that are cherished.”
Putting art front and centre has paid off. ‘Black and White’ does minimal to absolute perfection to deliver a collection fit for an art gallery and jewellery which will stand out more than any colourful piece.
