Designed in a move to recreate the emotional and narrative journey of the search for the mythical city of Shangri-la, Corian teamed up with Cabana Magazine to showcase a suite of maximalist and explorative installations – all using Corian’s signature ranges.
The Corian Cabana Club, which was unveiled at this year’s Milan Design Week, saw seven renowned creative professionals in interior design; decoration; and fashion design come together to craft seven unique ‘scenes’ for visitors to explore. The unifying aspects of bright colours and Corian designer bathroomware saw the cabana club’s installations, varying from Mexican bedrooms and Russian living rooms to Moroccan kitchens, standing together as one magnificent statement of design ingenuity.
The Gateway
The exhibition itself opened with ‘The Gateway’, a Corian wall designed by Austrian creative Christoph Radl, and highlighted different tones of welcoming green, inviting visitors through two arches, juxtaposed against the grid-like geometry.
“Once, when I was very young, I fell into a deep dream,” says Christoph on the origin of his design. “I found myself in a busy, agitate world where everybody was running around clueless in all directions and so I started to search for a way out. I started to follow a pink dog that abruptly went around a corner and so I found myself in front of a very imposing gateway. Before I could enter, I suddenly woke up.”
Through the arches, is a spellbinding passageway which Radl dubs The Mystery Tunnel, where vertical Corian panels guide the visitor though a series of elaborate lattice work.
An Italo-Mexican Bedroom
Inside, the intimate, Frida Kahlo-inspired ‘Mexican Bedroom’ scene greets visitors. Designed by Italian fashion designer Antonio Marras, the scene comprises an overflowing-with-colour boudoir, channelling the traditions of Mexican design through the lens of contemporary Italian aesthetics and Corian products.
All colours from the exhibit are featured in Corian’s 2017 launched Concrete, Prima and Onyx collections, which also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the brand.
These ranges, like all Corian products, are available in Australia exclusively through CASF, and the scenes of the Corian Cabana Club serve as a testament to the flexibility of the brand, and a reminder that bathroom design needn’t be the white and tan affair you remember.
