Sydney-based design firm takes on a venture with the 2009 SMH Chef of the Year.

Mima Design has completed their first ever restaurant fit-out in style, collaborating with 2009 SMH Good Food Guide’s Chef of the Year, Justin North, at his new Sydney venture Etch.

Located amongst the classic features of the Sydney Intercontinental Hotel, Etch draws influence from other heritage locations in Melbourne, and London, where similar restaurants sit within heritage buildings.

Seeking to move away from the more modern clean lines of other industry favourites, Mima Design have opted instead for a 1920s-inspired eclectic look that aims to appeal to many tastes.

The restaurant has been brought to life with art nouveau wallpaper, a quirky birdcage, and surreal paintings that cleverly juxtapose the past and present within the space, and encourage a unique look and feel.

Lighting also becomes a key focus in setting the warm ambience of the room, with ‘Shady’ wall lamps, ‘Marble’ felt lamps and a bespoke top hat light and Tripod Lights by Blue Mountains designers studio ham, making sure this Bridge Street establishment won’t be missed.
