As a world-class research, education, clinical practice and industry precinct site in the centre of Brisbane, the mission was to reflect the innovative spirit of the centre through an equally innovative design.

The concept behind PACE was to create a precinct that not only housed world class research and education spaces that invited and engaged interest and enjoyment from the general public through an exciting look.

A space that could adapt to the multi-functional dynamic of the building was fundamental to the layout, which incorporates a state-of-the-art scientific, teaching and business infrastructure within an innovative collaborative zone.

The streetscape along Cornwall Street is articulated by three different architectural elements making it striking in its scale, order and expression, reinforcing the urban character of the site.

Sympathetic to the bulk of the residencies opposite, the first architectural element begins with a long, predominantly glazed, three-storey high prism, which extends to the solid bookend element.

The challenge was to develop a design, which provided the necessary level of physical security without impacting on the spaciousness of the building, and at the same time providing a sense of inclusion and co-operation.

Woodhead Architects have easily risen up to the challenge with PACE project.
