Australian commercial designers, manufacturers and joiners AWM are this year celebrating their 20th anniversary. Sophia Watson explores what it is that brings such longevity and loyalty.

Attributing their success to abiding the ‘Australian made and owned’ ethos AWM has also ensured its success by remaining malleable in a changeable market.

Directors Anthony Scotts and Ric Lewarne explain: “Flexibility has kept us in the marketplace for the last 20 years, and constantly changing our business plan to adapt to changing markets is certainly important. “However, while other companies have moved to offshore sourcing, AWM has continued its commitment to manufacturing right here in Alexandria, Sydney.”

Founded from a modest beginning in 1993 in a 4-car lock-up garage, AWM has grown into employing over 70 management, sales, programming and factory technicians to design, revise and perfect AWM’s various products.

Today, AWM is locally produced in the Sydney-suburb of Alexandria at its 6000sqm ISO14001 certified factory and showroom. Since 1993, the company has expanded into Perth, Melbourne, and Brisbane with warehouses, sales support and project management teams

AWM has been sustained by its ability to respond quickly to market shifts. “Maintaining our flexibility and market intelligence is key,” explain Scotts and Lewarne. “We believe in contributing to the Australian economy by manufacturing and purchasing locally made product, and providing employment to over 70 people.”
