Meet Jon Goulder, a forth generation craftsman with a furniture filled history.

Jon Goulder grew up surrounded by furniture, both in his family factory, and in his family home.

His decision in 1992 to complete an apprenticeship in furniture making, not only made him a fourth generation furniture maker, but also cemented the place of furniture in his life.

He is now considered one of Australia’s most outstanding furniture designers.

Jon describes his clean-lined design sensibility as something of a reaction against the antique furniture that crowded his upbringing, yet he still wants his pieces to have longevity.

"I aim to design timeless furniture that can be loved for a lifetime and handed down through generations", says Jon.

His work is being picked up by all the right people, recently signing distribution rights with furniture big-shots, Living Edge.

"A collection of my work will now be represented in every capital city in Australia and will also be represented in the USA, thanks to Living Edge."

"I am currently in an intensive design process, I will design 8 new pieces, produce them to prototype and then exhibit the new works alongside a few of my previous pieces – Leda, stak and Calypso in a solo exhibition."

The exhibition will tour selected spaces nationally and then the body of work will tour to Europe and America. The exhibition is due to open in February 2009.

Jon was the inaugural winner of Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award, Winner of the Hobart Art Prize along with the People’s Choice Award and has been exhibited by the Powerhouse Museum and the Hobart museum and art gallery.

With this much success, we can’t wait to see what a fifth generation Goulder can do.
