Citing Sydney as a “Danish Architectural Mecca” (referencing the Sydney Opera House), so Bjarke Ingels began his talk at Tusculum House as a guest of HASSEL and the Australian Institute of Architects.

Visiting to explore potential for collaboration between HASSELL and his own firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the amiable designer presented an overview of his public space, building and infrastructure master plan work – some of which has gone to construction and others that are still conceptual studies.

As one commentator memorably put it; “theory meets pragmatism, meets optimism in the architecture of Bjarke Ingels.” With works dotted across Europe, North America and China, Ingels is nothing if not prolific.

In October 2011, the Wall Street Journal named him the ‘Innovator of the Year’ for architecture. This year, the same newspaper said he was ‘rapidly becoming one of the design world’s rising stars’.
