THE WORLD RUG PUZZLE
Published

The World Rug at the Ontera Surry Hills showroom is a brilliant example of the company’s design and technical expertise. To highlight the skill required in assembling the individual carpet tiles into one seamless rug, we’ve created an interactive game – see if you can solve the World Rug Puzzle!
The first in an ongoing series of specialty concept rugs to be installed at Ontera’s Surry Hills showroom, the World Rug creates a rich interior aesthetic and demonstrates the brand’s skill and creativity in designing custom flooring solutions.
Inspired by both art and architecture from around the world, The World Rug was developed as a style drop-in piece consisting of 4 x 12 tiles to coincide with the launch of the new Ontera showroom in Surry Hills.
Solve the interactive Puzzle to reveal the World Rug (if you’re stumped scroll to the bottom of the page).

“We wanted to use elements of traditional textiles and architectural icons such as the Chrysler building in New York, which offers some very unique 1930’s art deco stylised windows and iconic layered tip.” explains Aidan Thrum of Ontera, “The design elements were then overlaid to inject as much depth and texture as possible into the design.”
Part of the reason behind wanting to create such a large single design was to show the amount of detail which can be achieved. Ontera has a unique dye injection technology which enables them to create custom designs such as the World Rug and other custom design concepts.
“We wanted designers to realise the potential of Ontera’s Design freedom concept.”, continues Thrum. “It’s Australian design and Australian made with the opportunity to put your own design thumbprint on an interior concept.”
When looking at the finished, installed design you would think it was one piece of carpet, not 52 individual tiles. One of the most unique features of Ontera’s dye injection technology is the ability to create a seamless finish from a composite product.
The rug has been an instant hit at the showroom; “Many people have asked how this type of design is created or how a similar or more repeating pattern can be developed.” Thrum comments; “Ontera has a dedicated design team working full time on custom requests or adjustments to standard designs. If anyone is interested in creating a unique flooring concept and is unsure of how to approach it, Ontera’s design team can help develop their concept further.”
