Sam Johnson, better known as The Poster King, is the leading Australian authority on authentic collectable poster art
Australia’s best collection of international, authentic posters by Villemot, Cappiello and more will be available to purchase from CULT showrooms for these special three day events across Sydney and Brisbane.
Prior to the advent of Television – posters were the pivotal medium for advertisers, and the most recognized designers and artists have created many iconic images that graced the walls of cities around the world.
The Poster King explains “I see vintage posters as documents of a forgotten time. The collections we source and bring to Australia are the posters that never made it to the walls. They are in limited supply, and are rapidly becoming collectable.”
In 1993 the Poster King was living above an auction house in Paris where he became consumed by the imagery, and saw the need to preserve the art form. His passion ultimately lead to the opening his iconic Melbourne store VINTAGE POSTERS ONLY in 1995.
“The works are created by talented artists, printed by lithographers who, at the time, were responsible for producing the best quality poster arty for that era. The plates are masterfully constructed, and the attention to detail is evident in the works” Poster King continues.
For preservation – the posters are first lined with rice paper, prior to being linen-‐backed in Paris, and are available either framed or unframed, in a huge variety of sizes.
“We only sell original vintage billboard posters, we source the lithographic posters from Paris and around the world. The demand from our customers in Sydney and Melbourne has lead to our first series of pop-‐ups.” The King concludes.
