The Matter of Things at Stockholm Furniture Fair

Emerging and established designers from Scandinavia and the rest of the world will come together next week for the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2011.

An exhibit to look out for will be The Matter of Things, featuring work by 13 students graduating in Product Design from Sweden’s Beckmans College of Design.

The collection was created with the key word care as its basis, with each student researching and creating products that suggest solutions to everyday problems, influence how we see things, imitate human form and movement, or encourage sentimental value and interaction with the products.

Gustav Carlberg explores perspective with his playful upturned chair, asking us to look at our furniture from an unexpected angle and in an unexpected way, challenging our assumptions about what a piece of furniture should be.

 

Anni Arnefjord’s project is called The Matter of Making Room. She seeks to explore human behaviour from a social and political perspective through her hexagonal tables with their careful anti-hierarchical placement.

 

Eddi Tornberg uses the heat created when sitting in a chair to generate electricity to power a lamp, and explores the possibilities of creating energy from the radio waves of mobile phones.

 

Anna Glansen looks at bonding and sentimentality with her walking floor lamp, asking us to connect meaningfully and bond with the objects we own, thereby promoting more responsible consumption.

 

The Stockholm Furniture Fair runs from 8-12 February 2011.
