The Art of Design

Art and seating solutions may not be the most obvious pairing, but at this year’s Brisbane Indesign the two worlds came together at Chairbiz’s Artists at Work.

Chairbiz gathered 10 emerging Queensland artists to take part in their contribution to The Project.

 

 

Whereas The Project traditionally consists of physical installations in exhibitors’ showrooms, the Chairbiz team took a different approach, inhabiting an adjoining garage space and hosting a live art session throughout the day. Visitors had the unique experience of watching the artworks take form before their very eyes.

 

 

“Brisbane Indesign presented a fantastic opportunity to bring 2 creative industries together,” said Stewart Brown, Managing Director, Chairbiz.

“We thought about how we could challenge some perceptions about the role visual arts play in our environment at both a work level and a personal level.

“Artists at Work seemed like the right way to encourage us all to think and act a little more creatively.”

 

 

Taking part in the live event were Grace McKellar, Tam McLean, De Gillett, Susanna Rose Sykes, Simon Massey di Vallazza, Simon De Groot, Steve McFeat, Kyle Mitchell, Brooke Dunlop – who took out the People’s Choice award, and Emily Fong, whose artist was deemed winner by special guest judge, artist Nic Plowman.

A live auction at the end of the day saw visitors bid for their favourite artworks, with all money going back to the artists themselves. Lucky bidders went home proud knowing that they were in possession of a little piece of Brisbane Indesign history.

 

 

“The artists were both creative and brave, and it reflected in the amazing standard of work produced,” said Brown.

“It was interesting to see that 3 of the 10 artists were practising architects. It is inspiring to help emerging artists get some recognition.”
