Temporal Formal: Expanded Architecture at Seidler City

The foyer spaces of three iconic Harry Seidler buildings in Sydney’s CBD will be transformed during the 2014 Sydney Architecture Festival, for a one-‐night only light exhibition on Friday 7 November called Temporal Formal at Seidler City.

The special event, curated by Expanded Architecture especially for the Festival, in partnership with the Seidler Architectural Foundation and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, will lead guests on an evening tour throughout Sydney’s CBD revealing specially commissioned contemporary art installations created by artists and architects inside some of the city’s best-‐known buildings.
The evening exploration of temporary art installations commences at Harry Seidler’s building foyer at 9 Castlereagh Street at 6pm, before moving onto the foyer of Australia Square at 7pm and later concluding at 8pm at Grosvenor Place at 255 George Street.
The exhibition is the result of an open call to artists and architects, who were invited by ExpandedArchitecture to propose contemporary art projects that examine the intersections between art and architecture throughout different eras, such as Bauhaus or modular art from the 1960s.

The selected artists and architects creating site specific works for the exhibition are: Ainslie Murray; Bellemo & Cat; Campbell Drake, Karen Cummings & Elizabeth Drake; Cottage Industries; Eduardo Kairuz; Francis Kenna; Kate Dunn & Phillip Gough; Lindsay Webb & Amanda Cole; Nina & Elena Tory-‐Henderson; Ryuichi Fujimura & Kate Sherman and Tina Fox.
Temporal Formal at Seidler City is curated by Spatial Arts Practitioner Sarah Breen Lovett and Director and Chief Executive Officer of the respected Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Dr Claudia Perren. Dr Perren and Ms Breen Lovett selected 17 artists from the submissions to create site-‐specific works for the exhibition.
Sarah Breen Lovett commented: “We invite guests to engage with architecture and art at this one night only exhibition presented by Expanded Architecture. On the city tour guests will encounter sound and performance art including dance, sonic environments, piano and opera, as well as temporal art installations made from crushed glass, water-‐disolving lace, liquid chalk, modulated furniture, fog, digital interactive projection, cross stitch, and crochet. The works will enable a shifted experiential encounter with these iconic buildings, as well as create a unique dialogue between the buildings, and art and architecture. ”

This one night only exhibition, is also timed to coincide with the major exhibition celebrating the acclaimed architect’s work HARRYSEIDLER:PAINTINGTOWARDARCHITECTURE that will be presented at the Museum of Sydney, launching on 1 November.
