The festival atmosphere in the Surry Hills Central precinct was electric during this year’s Saturday in Design.
Things got well and truly started in the Surry Hills Central precinct on +Friday with a few events to get everyone warmed up for Saturday. At Spence & Lyda artist Lisa Hoelzel transformed the showroom into a Missoni Home-inspired cactus garden, while across the road botton + gardiner celebrated the launch of their colourful new TETRA seating module.
The sun was shining on Harmony Park come Saturday, making it the place to be, with Iken and Macquarie Textiles setting up a marquee complete with lively Dalmatians, in Surry Hills Central.
The area from Foster Street up to Commonwealth Street was a sea of SiD visitors, taking in everything from the colourful textiles at Kvadrat Maharam to the new products at Hub and the much talked about architect-designed furniture at Small Australian Projects.
The Australian vibe continued at Planet, where bespoke furniture pieces were shown amongst earthy tones and native Australian floral arrangements. CSM and Kinnarps paired up with Andrew Aloisio to create a ’Progressive Organic’ installation in the showroom for The Project to showcase new office solutions with a green flavour. In keeping with the green theme, a designer bicycle was offered to the visitor with the most innovative idea for a greener, cost-effective office landscape.
Those in a festive mood headed around the corner to Campbell Street, where Schiavello teamed up with Woodhead for The Project and put on a backyard themed party to showcase their new products.
The crowds at Living Edge Studio were also eager to celebrate, and the showroom was filled to capacity throughout the day. It was one of the overall highlights of SiD, with finalists in Launch Pad exhibited upstairs, and the hugely popular Miniature Chair Competition downstairs, in which entrants tested their design and craftsmanship skills by creating exquisite miniature chairs from Chandon corks and wire.
