A marriage between heritage details and a high-spec contemporary interior, a discerning clientele and a focus on luxury were the parameters of a tough brief presented to Rugs Carpet & Design for Perth’s newest residential development, Steves Apartments.

The company collaborated closely on the project with interior designers Susan Griffiths, Genevieve Hartney and Suzanne Gallagher of Griffiths Design Group, as well as Philip Griffiths of Philip Griffiths Architects.

Tasked with designing the rugs and carpet for the high traffic communal entrance, corridors and stairs for a landmark building, RC&D’s Jenny Hewitt worked with the project team to design an intricate stripe that accentuates the long lines of the building, utilising 10 colours to create a ‘barcode’ effect.

This simple approach was given further dimension by carving and bevelling askew lines by hand into the rug. This textural element enhances the carpet’s visual impact alongside the polished jarrah and decorative plasterwork.

“The building is a Perth landmark,” says Hewitt. “Everyone wound up there sooner or later and we all know the stairs of the old Steve’s hotel. In collaboration with the designers, runners were chosen rather than carpet to relate to the 1908 vintage and show off the solid bull-nosed stairs.”

The rugs and carpets were hand tufted at 88oz pile weight and installed on an acoustic rubber underlay to provide an opulent feel underfoot.

Central to the success of the design was the contrast of the lime, avocado, olive, steel greys and plum against the oyster white walls. These accent colours showcase the detail of the original corbelled arches and pressed ceilings.
