STARON® DESIGN AWARD WINNERS

The Staron® Design Awards have been created to award excellence in design to designers, architects and students designing with Staron® Solid Surfaces by Samsung.
In 2013 the Staron® Design Award judging panel was comprised of Stephen Varady of Stephen Varady Associates, Amanda Stanaway of Woods Bagot and Nicky Lobo of Habitus Magazine. The judges met in late 2013 to decide on the winners across three categories – ‘Commercial’, ‘Residential’, and ‘Concept’.
The Commercial winner is Mark McConnell of Mima Design Pty Ltd for their work on the Moochi kiosk in Hurstville, Sydney. This project features Staron® in colour Pearl as the external cladding around the entire perimeter of the kiosk. It has been thermoformed to create soft curves around the corners. Staron® was also created by Samsung in custom colour – Rubin – to match the corporate Moochi colour for all the integrated signage. The Rubin signage has been in-layed into the Pearl cladding. In the evening the signage is backlit and all the Moochi branding illuminates.
“For the outdoor location Staron® is a great surface solution due to its UV stability, durability against the elements and resistance against graffiti”, says Mark, Mima Design about selecting Staron® for this project.
The Staron® surface continues to the inside surfaces on the serving counter and window envelope. The surface creates an integrated solution for the storage and display of the Moochi toppings behind a window within view of customers, so that they can watch their frozen yoghurt order be created. Staron® has also been used on the table tops in the seated areas.
The Residential winner is Kathie Motley of Kitchens by Kathie. Kathie designed a bold and striking love heart vanity made entirely of Staron® Solid Surfaces in colour Univers.
The vanity has been thermoformed into the heart shape from the outside to the inside of the vanity sink in one smooth monolithic surface. The vanity also continues to a Staron® wall in a contrast colour Sanded Onyx, with additional carved heart shapes at the height of the wall. The heart shaped vanity is also highlighted with a beautiful vintage style heart shaped mirror.
“I had been thinking for some time how to really show clients what can be done with Staron. I chose the heart to show the virtually unlimited applications of Staron®. Anyone who has ever seen the heart will never forget it”, says Kathie.
The Concept winner is Callum Campbell of Callum Campbell Design. Callum designed an elegant, minimalistic and functional shelf. Designed with 6mm Staron in Bright White and thermoformed to create an art-like design.
This shelf would be a stunning feature in any room, with its sleek smooth curves and organic shape. The curves of the design also work to make it appear as if the shelf were ‘floating’.
“Both practical and aesthetically pleasing, the wave shelf utilises Staron’s inherent ability to be thermoformed into complex organic shapes. The materials strength, seamless gluing and workability make it perfectly suited to overcome the challenges within producing the design”, says Callum.
